The Capuchins thought the Franciscans too liberal, too soft. I studied for a time with the Capuchins.

 

The hipsters thought the University of Kansas in the late Sixties too conservative, too hard. I studied for a time with the hipsters.

 

The United States Navy found my misplaced enlistment in the Marine Corps acceptable. I studied celestial navigation and new-fangled computer-based communications with the Navy.

 

The Graduate School at Kansas State University found the English Department at the University of Kansas too free, too unstuck in time. I studied for a time with the graduate humanities faculty at an agricultural college.

 

Then I quit studying and went to teaching.

 

When I quit teaching, I started writing.

 

After a while I cowboyed some.

 

Now mostly I write.
